Abstract
Dans les années 70 et 80, le roman hispanophone caribéen et le roman brésilien intègrent de nombreux éléments des mass media et présentent de nouveaux types de héros inspirés de la culture populaire urbaine. Cet article identifie les matrices culturelles du phénomène et montre que ce nouveau type de métissage permettait de contester les modèles antérieurs considérés par trop abstraits; l'utilisation du pathétique permet en particulier d'échapper à la conception stricte de l'art comme représentation. Ces récits constituent une prise de position pour une réinterprétation du rôle des passions dans l'imaginaire américain au sens large du terme.
