Abstract
Au coeur des ténèbres , de Joseph Conrad, écrit en 1902, a été classiquement interprété comme un livre éminemment politique qui dénonce l’impérialisme de Léopold II, en dévoilant l’odieux mensonge d’une propagande humanitaire qui cache la violence de l’entreprise coloniale. Dans cet article, l’auteur montre que Conrad a transformé la fable construite autour de Kurtz et de sa bande criminelle en une méditation philosophique, profondément pessimiste, sur la condition humaine. La lecture anthropologique ici proposée défend l’idée que Conrad a voulu peindre dans son roman la rencontre des civilisateurs, dans la solitude du Congo, avec leur propre sauvagerie plutôt que le primitivisme de l’Afrique. La littérature vient en quelque sorte fixer les limites des textes anthropologiques quand ils traitent de situations extrêmes comme la sauvagerie, le cannibalisme et la sorcellerie. Et la philosophie vient alors, elle aussi, au secours de l’anthropologie.
