La famille a beaucoup changé au cours des derniers siècles. La « famille traditionnelle » était à plusieurs points de vue une structure basée sur la parenté plutôt que sur le couple et elle servait à plusieurs fonctions dans la société. Elle était surtout un groupe de travail dont les membres partageaient les tâches nécessaires à la survie et les relations familiales ressemblaient à des relations de travail. Dans ce contexte, la situation de l’enfant était précaire puisqu’il avait tendance a gêner plutôt qu’à contribuer à la production familiale. L’infanticide et l’abandon étaient des possibilités réelles et les soins accordés aux enfants étaient souvent inadéquats. La valeur de l’enfant se rapportait surtout aux contributions économiques qu’il pouvait éventuellement faire au profit de la famille. La « famille moderne » est plutôt une structure conjugale qui n’a pas tellement de fonctions dans la société mais qui est devenue plus importante du point de vue de la gratification affective des membres. Elle fournit un soutien psychologique aux individus. Dans ce contexte, l’enfant occupe une situation plus favorable puisqu’il contribue aux relations affectives dans la famille. On attache beaucoup d’importance à son bien-être au point où la maternité est souvent vue comme une vocation à plein temps. Par contre, cette nouvelle attitude enlève à l’enfant une certaine autonomie dans ses activités. De plus, l’importance qu’on accorde à l’intimité implique que l’enfant a de plus fortes chances de faire l’expérience de la séparation de ses parents quand ces derniers ne trouvent pas ce qu'ils veulent à l’intérieur de la famille et divorcent afin de chercher ailleurs.
