Abstract
Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that is obtained by endogenous synthesis and dietary intake. Creatine phosphate has a high phosphoryl group transfer potential and serves as an ATP buffer during muscle contraction. Creatine supplementation increases muscle strength in healthy persons. The aim of our review was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of creatine supplementation in muscle diseases. We evaluated randomised controlled trials of creatine supplementation in patients with hereditary muscle diseases. The primary outcome measure was the change in muscle strength determined by quantitative muscle testing.
