Londyn Stefanii Kossowskiej, czyli "moje miasto w obcym kraju" Polska powojenna literatura powstająca poza krajem to znakomity obraz tożsamościotwórczej emigracyjnej negocjacji oswajania miejsc, które imigranci z czasem nazwą własnymi, poprzez opis miejsc osiedlania się polskich wygnańców, którzy często z trudem adaptowali się do życia w przestrzeni przechowującej nie ich pamięć.Wygnańcy, których losy nie przeniosły na inne kontynenty, nie musieli się co prawda borykać z problemami niezrozumiałej organizacji przestrzeni miejskiej, jakie opisała Eva Hoffman 1 .Niemniej jednak, choć miasta europejskie rozwijały się przeważnie bez wizji i planów na przyszłość, zgodnie z geograficzną rzeźbą terenu, wymaganiami politycznymi i społecznymi, wszystkie je łączyło to, że budowały swoją teraźniejszość na przeszłości, starzały się, stawały się elementem historii, istotnymi miejscami i przestrzenią historycznych narodowotwórczych zmian.Będąc dla mieszkańców jednocześnie znanym i oswojonym terenem, i niepoznawalną abstrakcyjną konstrukcją dostępną jedynie poprzez sztukę 2 , przede wszystkim jednak miasta stanowiły przestrzenny zbiór miejsc pamięci, istotny element archiwum narodowej historii.Tłumaczy to, przynajmniej częściowo, powody, dla których po zniszczeniach wojennych odbudowano Warszawę czy Gdańsk.
