Abstract
Cross-cultural dressing, a previously overlooked aspect of late Victorian investigative journalism, provided female reporters with the means and authority to carry out their investigations and enabled them to manipulate class- and gender-based assumptions about who had broad access to the streets of London. Ethnic attire allowed women to shed their “respectable” identities and subvert the social pressures that restricted middle-class women’s mobility in the city. Yet by publishing their articles in periodicals that combined investigative reporting of social issues with illustrations in a forum that promised to be suitable for middleclass family audiences, women were able to maintain their respectability. Their investigations highlighted the complex ways women could be both spectators and spectacles in the nineteenth century.
