Hector Leroux (1829-1900), peintre féru d’Antiquité, exécute pour le Salon de 1885 un tableau intitulé « La pierre mystérieuse de Pompéi ». Ce sujet s’inscrit dans le goût du public du second Empire pour les œuvres d’inspiration gréco-romaine. Contrairement à ses contemporains « néo-grecs », Hector Leroux ne recherche pas à reconstituer une scène pompéienne anecdotique, mais à convier son public sur la piste d’un mystère archéologique : l’existence d’une pierre noire, dans un quartier reculé de Pompéi, à l’origine d’une dévotion cachée. La présente analyse tente de percer ce mystère imaginaire à la lumière de l’œuvre de l’artiste et des découvertes à Pompéi lors de son séjour en Italie.
