Abstract
L'étude analyse la correspondance cléricale en cherchant à mettre en lumière le rôle des plaintes et des rumeurs relatives au clergé dans les communautés rurales de la Gaspésie, à la fin du xviiie siècle et au début du xixe siècle. Elle montre que les unes et les autres sont étroitement liées et qu'elles remplissent deux fonctions bien distinctes : celle d'instrument de contrôle des prêtres par la population, qui loin d'être totalement soumise aux ecclésiastiques sait manifester son mécontentement et exprimer ses aspirations, et celle d'outil politique qu'utilisent les différents groupes pour faire valoir leurs intérêts dans les conflits et les luttes de pouvoir qui secouent les paroisses.
