Résumé Aux XIX e et XX e siècles, comme leurs homologues d’autres pays, les enseignants canadiens se sont engagés dans l’activité militante. Dans chaque province ou presque, ils sont sortis de leurs salles de classe et ont rendu public leur engagement en vue d’améliorer leurs salaires, leurs avantages et leurs conditions de travail. Quelques grèves ont duré un jour ou deux, impliquant un petit nombre d’écoles, tandis que d’autres se sont prolongées sur plusieurs mois, entraînant des milliers d’enseignants. De manière non exhaustive, cet article présente une brève histoire du militantisme et des grèves des enseignants au Canada, en relation avec les changements et les différences entre les systèmes éducatifs des États. Ensuite, il examine quelques-unes des raisons pour lesquelles les enseignants tantôt se sont lancés dans le militantisme, tantôt l’ont refusé. Une des hypothèses est que le déficit de militantisme tient à des questions d’identité individuelle et collective et au rôle d’une certaine professionnalisation. L’histoire des systèmes éducatifs canadiens comprend, de la part des autorités officielles, un projet appuyé de promotion d’une idéologie professionnaliste qui a beaucoup joué contre le militantisme enseignant.
