Abstract
Le programme des jardins communautaires de la Ville de Montréal offre aux Montréalais la possibilité de cultiver un petit jardinet pour produire des légumes. Il est aussi compris comme un espace de loisir et de sociabilité. Espace à la fois public, institutionnalisé, socialisé et individualisé, le jardin communautaire apparaît comme un espace ambigu. L’objectif de cet article est de comprendre les dimensions sociales entourant les jardins communautaires. Il s’agit ainsi d’analyser les interactions sociales et les rapports entre les jardiniers afin de saisir les types de sociabilité que ces espaces engendrent. Le portrait de l’image sociale des jardins communautaires qui s’en dégage laisse entrevoir un espace à sociabilité réduite, fait de relations furtives et largement tournées vers la pratique du jardinage, constitué d’individus ou de petits groupes. Le jardin n’a de communautaire que le nom.
