L’étude du passage du père Marie-Alain Couturier au Québec durant la guerre permet de rapatrier la représentation que les Québécois d’hier et d’aujourd’hui se font d’un conflit toujours et déjà européen. L’activité du père Couturier témoigne à souhait du fait que si la guerre fut une période de prospérité économique en Amérique du Nord, elle fut aussi le moment d’une effervescence culturelle et intellectuelle méconnue. Le travail de l’artiste devenu dominicain révèle un besoin de « libération », là-bas et ici, et donne tout son sens à son compagnonnage de la France libre : promotion de la liberté va de pair avec liberté intérieure, avec spiritualité, avec affirmation du sujet, trame essentielle de la peinture moderne en train de s’esquisser. Comme en littérature chez les gens de La Relève des années 1930, Couturier tente de formuler une esthétique artistique moderne et chrétienne.
