Les rapports entre jeunesse et marges sociales nécessitent un détour historique afin de renouveler les perspectives actuelles en ce qui regarde les fondements analytiques des théories et des modes d’intervention reliés aux jeunes marginaux. Les recherches historiographiques montrent l’importance structurale de certaines formes d’insertion telles que les rites antiques de l’éphébie, dont la cryptie et les abbayes de jeunesse qui organisaient les charivaris au moyen âge notamment. Par-delà notre représentation archaïque de ces repères historiques, ceux-ci nous enseignent que les modes traditionnels d’insertion des jeunes étaient fondés sur le principe paradoxal de socialisation à l’ordre par le désordre, structurant ainsi un imaginaire associé à une tension entre le sauvage et le civilisé. Ce principe, dévalorisé par la rationalisation croissante de l’existence humaine, se retrouverait encore au coeur des manifestations de marginalités juvéniles actuelles, mais sans reconnaissance du monde adulte ; sauf en ce qui regarde la visée consommatoire des images de marginalité en lien avec l’injonction normative de l’autoréalisation de soi. La marginalité constituerait un complexe de relations de pouvoir impliquant des contextes où se jouent des changements sociaux en émergence ou en train de se réaliser, qu’il s’agisse de contrôle social ou d’émancipation.
