“Wir sind alle Oranienplatz”! Space for Refugees and Social Justice in Berlin

Abstract
For nearly two years Berlin-Kreuzberg was the site of a large-scale protest camp set up to mobilize awareness and activism with respect to asylum politics in Germany and Europe. Located on the central square Oranienplatz, this protest incited broader questions about the relationship between cities and citizenship and the geopolitical role of urban space. The present article traces the emergence and development of this protest movement, referred to as Refugee Tent Action, its political footing, and especially its urban tracks. With recourse to theories of space, the commons, and citizenship, I demonstrate how this protest movement progressed into an urban manifestation for community, public space, civic engagement, and social justice.
