L’école, lieu de construction du lien social à la fois dans sa fonction d’intégration à une communauté et d’assimilation d’une culture, est confrontée au paradoxe de viser l’égalité des individus tout en valorisant leur différence. L’objet de cette contribution veut moins analyser de manière descriptive les procédés favorisant la dynamique du lien social que les dysfonctionnements pédagogiques qui ont cours au sein de l’établissement scolaire et qui contraignent son développement et ce, malgré l’implication et l’application des enseignants. La responsabilité partagée de l’éducation de l’élève suppose l’adéquation entre une vision de l’école et les visées de celle-ci. Le cloisonnement disciplinaire a tendance à faire perdre de vue la diversité des missions de l’enseignant et à privilégier des pratiques individuelles pouvant entrer en contradiction. Enfin, la gestion des élèves dans le temps de l’interaction directe mêle souvent jugement personnel et jugement professionnel, ce qui peut être source d’injustice. Derrière chaque tension se pose la question de l’expression des singularités au regard de la finalité scolaire d’éducation citoyenne. Le lien social s’entrevoit alors comme moyen plutôt que comme fin en soi.
