Abstract
Canadian fiddler Don Messer saved a massive collection of personal documents that enable researchers to examine questions of repertoire, including definition, use, and meaning. The contrast between his relatively well-documented "old-time" media repertoire and the less-documented "modern" dance repertoire underscores the selective nature of the process of canon formation.
