En retenant la définition de l'iconicité proposée par Tony Jappy, à savoir « l'ensemble des propriétés qualitatives, formelles, hérité de son objet dynamique par un signe donné », cette intervention proposera une analyse sémiotique d'une allégorie visuelle, en l'occurrence celle constituée par l'icône nationale Britannia. L'allégorie (plastique) est un discours visuel qui se construit en utilisant des signes visuels. Le but de mon analyse est d'interroger le processus de la sémiose activé par l'allégorie visuelle quand il prend la forme, comme c'est le cas avec Britannia, d'une icône complexe. Utilisant les catégories et la terminologie de Peirce, mon texte poursuit l'analyse sémiotique de Britannia en se concentrant surtout sur la structure des inférences que l'allégorie, en tant que signe, invite de la part de l'interprétant, et de la contrainte qu'elle exerce sur le processus d'interprétation. Car l'allégorie, en proposant entre signe et objet un parallélisme plus systématique et plus fermé que la métaphore pure, appelle une activation plus suivie des diverses logiques d'inférence proposées par Peirce que sont la déduction, l'induction et l'abduction. L'analyse est étayée par un corpus d'illustrations qui, en montrant les diverses formes visuelles que prend l'icône Britannia, souligne un paradoxe à l'intérieur de l'allégorie visuelle - la mobilité dans l'unité, sur le plan de l'interprétation et sur le plan de la représentation.
