Le bruit et l'odeur… du succès? Contestation et contradictions dans le rock métis de Zebda

Abstract
Le groupe de rock métis Zebda a fréquemment reçu les louanges de la presse de gauche en tant que groupe ‘engagé’ ou ‘contestataire’. Le fait qu'il soit mené par trois chanteurs d'origine algérienne pourrait laisser supposer que la rébellion est l'expression nécessaire de ces artistes français issus de l'immigration. Or, au travers d'une analyse sociologique du parcours et de la réception de Zebda, cet article démontre qu'aucune équation automatique n'existe entre identité ‘minoritaire’ et l'expression de la contestation. En observant le parcours individuel des chanteurs, leurs choix artistiques et leur gestion du succès à partir de 1999, cet article éclaire les origines contre-culturelles mais aussi les aspirations petit-bourgeoises du groupe. La trajectoire apparemment ‘subversive’ de Zebda, située au sein du discours sur la recherche ‘d'authenticité’ dans la chanson, peut alors se lire comme une ascension sociale, une success story qui rapproche ces beurs de l'intelligentsia gauchiste dominante. Imbriqué dans cette réflexion, l'article pose la question de l'évolution d'une culture ‘de jeunes’ lorsqu'elle est produite et consommée par des adultes à la réflexion intellectuelle élaborée.
