Soil formation on supraglacial tephra deposits, Klutlan Glacier, Yukon Territory

Abstract
Soils formed on the White River tephra (1147 cal years BP) cover a large portion of a complex of late Holocene ice-cored moraines at the terminus of the Klutlan Glacier in southwestern Yukon. Supraglacial debris is subject to continuing disturbance by mass wasting and erosion as the underlying glacial ice melts, creating a complex mosaic of vegetation and soil types. Patches of mature spruce forest with thick (> 20 cm) forest floors on Brunisolic soils are juxtaposed with Regosols covered by shrubs or discontinuous biological soil crusts. This pedological diversity will persist until the underlying glacial ice has completely melted. Overall, the moderate degree of weathering of the tephra is similar to that observed in Brunsolic and Cryosolic soils formed on this material elsewhere in southern Yukon. Although ephemeral, this pedogenic setting has likely occurred repeatedly in northwestern North America, given the level of volcanic activity and glacier extent during the Quaternary.
