Dans cet article, les auteurs présentent des résultats obtenus à partir de l’exploitation de listes nominatives coloniales et des registres paroissiaux, concernant des populations aborigènes situées dans la région connue sous le nom d’Andes centro-méridionales, au cours des XVII e et XVIII e siècles. L’application à ces données de deux méthodes d’estimation, l’une basée sur les modèles des populations stables, l’autre sur la projection inverse proposée par Ronald Lee, donne à penser que les deux méthodes produisent des résultats similaires, montrant, par exemple, que le XVIII e siècle a été globalement pire que le siècle précédent. L’espérance de vie à la naissance en est un indice clair. Voilà probablement un cas où la dynamique démographique peut contribuer à l’explication des phénomènes sociaux. En effet, pendant le XVIII e siècle se sont produites dans la région une centaine de rébellions indigènes environ, en plus de la grande révolte de Túpac Amaru-Túpac Catari.
