Abstract
Au Québec comme en France, les orphelinats présentent les mêmes caractéristiques et les mêmes ambivalences, mais l’organisation générale de l’aide à l’enfance diffère d’un État à l’autre. Les distinctions entre les orphelinats français et québécois résultent de la place qu’ils occupent au sein de chaque projet d’assistance publique. De part et d’autre de l’Atlantique, le degré d’implication de l’Église et l’État en matière sociale influencera l’action des orphelinats, et plus tard leur représentation. Absorbés après la Seconde Guerre mondiale par les dispositifs hégémoniques du secteur médico-social, les orphelinats n’ont plus actuellement aucune réalité et ne subsistent qu’à travers l’imagination collective.
