Abstract
Réalisée à l'aide d'un fichier longitudinal de microdonnées sur les établissements manufacturiers (1974 à 1999), cette étude a pour but d'évaluer l'effet de l'accroissement du commerce sur le niveau de spécialisation industrielle des économies manufacturières régionales. En accord avec la théorie selon laquelle les échanges sont dictés par l'avantage comparatif, l'analyse démontre que, dans toutes les régions, une plus forte intensité des exportations (exportations en pourcentage de la production) est associée à une spécialisation industrielle plus poussée. Cependant, elle montre aussi que les variations de l'intensité des exportations ne sont que faiblement associées à celles de la spécialisation. Il en est ainsi parce que l'avantage comparatif a tendance à se déplacer des industries qui représentent une part importante de l'emploi régional dans le secteur de la fabrication vers celles qui, au départ, représentent une part plus faible. Ces fluctuations de l'avantage comparatif permettent d'expliquer pourquoi les régions manufacturières du Canada ne se sont pas spécialisées davantage malgré le contexte d'intégration croissante au marché mondial.
