Abstract
Contre diverses visions de la fin des temps ( Endzeit ) qui ont cours aujourd'hui, cette étude propose de réactiver le concept de Spätzeit (une époque tardive), déjà utilisé par des penseurs comme A. Riegl, W. Benjamin et H. Bloom, afin de penser notre condition historique. Plus spécifiquement, deux des affects reliés à la Spätzeit seront explorés : la nostalgie et la mélancolie. Leur base commune réside dans un sujet affecté par la perte d'un objet désiré. Le sujet nostalgique rejette la condition de la Spätzeit en cherchant à rétablir l'objet perdu et sa jouissance. Le sujet mélancolique, par contre, sait que la perte est irréversible et consacre ses efforts - artistiques et intellectuels - à s'accommoder des réalités de sa condition historique, sans pour autant oublier sa perte. Les manifestations des deux affects sont multiples aujourd'hui. L'expression directe de la nostalgie n'étant guère acceptée, cet affect a appris à ruser pour s'exprimer indirectement. On propose l'analyse de quelques-unes de ces ruses, tant artistiques qu'intellectuelles, et esquisse l'examen des expressions de la mélancolie.
