Abstract
Los trabajos sobre gramaticalización se han centrado en procesos ya consumados. En este trabajo se intentará mostrar por qué motivos el participio pendiente no ha podido, y no puede, desarrollarse como elemento prepositivo, al contrario de lo que ha sucedido en otras lenguas romances como el francés. Para ello, revisaremos la variación que ha mantenido con otros competidores que podrían haber impedido su recategorización.
