Anthony Wall analiza el fenómeno musical en el contexto cultural más amplio, en sus manifestaciones semióticas. La música y la filosofía se mezclan en forma tangible en la interpretación. Los problemas sintácticos relacionados con la variación musical están vinculados al deseo expreso, que yace en el corazón antropológico de nuestra naturaleza humana, de representar, desde una perspectiva positiva, nuestros recurrentes roces con la muerte. La música (por referencia), la palabra (en su función metalingüística) y la imagen interactúan dialógicamente en este texto. Una aproximación interdisciplinaria al fenómeno musical a través del análisis de las “Variaciones Goldberg” de Bach y sus transformaciones en las versiones tempranas y tardías del notable intérprete canadiense Glenn Gould.
