L’objet principal de l’article est le jardinage urbain collectif de Russie, effectué par les habitants des villes sur des sols urbains, périurbains, agricoles, constructibles ou non contructibles avec des références aux autres types de jardinage urbain. Le jardinage urbain collectif russe apporte des références importantes pour la théorisation de l’agriculture urbaine. Il s’agit d’une agriculture urbaine familiale (AUF) au sens d’activité extra-professionnelle pratiquée par des urbains et non par des agriculteurs. C’est une activité non marchande instituée par l’Etat, les entreprises et la population. Elle sert de tampon régulateur des crises, en combinant les fonctions relatives à la production alimentaire, à la santé, au repos, aux loisirs, à l’éducation des enfants, à la création artistique. La conquête du droit à construire une habitation sur les parcelles des collectifs de jardins fut une forme de démocratisation de l’accès des urbains à la terre et à la nature. C’est un traitement de la pauvreté par la généralisation à toute la société urbaine d’un élément constitutif du mode de vie de la classe moyenne.
