Abstract
Mann l Lyrisch-dramatischer Dichter, steht unter dem altesten erhaltenen Text des Autors. An dieser Unterschrift verdient zweierlei Beachtung. Einerseits stand ganz offensichtlich schon fur den Vierzehnjahrigen ein ziemlich genau bestimmter Entwurf seiner in der vollen Bedeutung des Adjektivs beruf lichen Existenz fest, wie er ihn dann resolut verwirklichen sollte. Andererseits erfolgte Umsetzung doch auch unter einer Modifizierung der generischen Selbstdefinition als lyrisch-dramatischer Dichter, einer Verschiebung vom lyrisch-dramatische[n], und in Thomas Manns Sprachgebrauch heist das fast schon: vom uberhaupt zum Schriftsteller und Prosaerzahler, wie er sich im Gesang vom Kindchen apostrophiert (8, 1069), oder zum Novellisten, als den er sich in der ursprunglich so genannten Skizze Beim Propheten portratiert hat (8, 367). Die Verschiebung scheint sich an einer lebensgeschichtlich wichtigen Stelle und Schwelle vollzogen haben. Jedenfalls stellt sie sich so in der Distanz dar, aus der heraus Thomas Mann im Gesang vom Kindchen auf seinen Werdegang Ruckschau halt. Dass biographisch-poetologische Selbstreflexion ausgerechnet im Gesang vom Kindchen erfolgt, einem ohnedies patent autobiographischen Text, versteht sich fast von selbst. Denn wahrend in Thomas Manns kanonischem Œuvre, im Erwahlten et a od r im Felix Krull, Ve se sonst nur als Z tat, in den direkten Reden literarischer Figuren und in oft unverkennbar parodistischer Absicht auftauchen, geriert sich auktoriale Instanz im Gesang vom Kindchen selber und ganz ausnahmsweise ernsthaft oder nur ungewollt komisch als metrische[r] Dichter (8, 1070), als eben eines Gesang[s]. Dieser allerdings verdient seinen generischen Titel nicht ganz, ja noch nicht einmal halb: Zwischen Gesang und verstandigem Wort halt er wohlig Mitte (8, 1069), beziehungsweise halt er noch nicht einmal wirklich die Mitte. Nach Ausweis einer Tagebuchnotiz wusste Thomas Mann immer schon und nahm er bewusst in Kauf, dass der also nur cum grano salis so uberschriebene Gesang vom Kindchen zu prosaisch ausfallen wurde (Tagebucher 1918-1921, 123);
