Abstract

Each year over 150 000 people in the UK will experience stroke. It has been estimated that constipation can effect up to a quarter of the general population at some stage in their lifetime. Many factors can combine to contribute to constipation in stroke survivors, such as reduced mobility, reduced bowel motility, inadequate fluid and fibre intake. Therefore patients who have survived a stroke have a higher risk of suffering from this distressing syndrome than the general public. This paper explores the rationale for changing from a reactive toward a proactive approach in the management of constipation in stroke survivors. It also outlines the initial steps taken by one district nursing team to bring about this change.
