Cet article met en lumière de nombreuses similitudes entre l'histoire orale et l'histoire des femmes, tant en ce qui concerne les causes de leur émergence et de leur évolution, les critiques auxquelles elles se sont heurtées que les défis qu'elles ont posés à l'histoire traditionnelle. Il précise ensuite ce que cette méthodologie a révélé du fonctionnement de la mémoire, particulièrement celle des femmes, et de définir ses potentialités par rapport à une pratique de l'histoire qui tiendrait compte prioritairement de la dynamique des rapports de sexes.
