Abstract
Bien que les négociations entreprises à ce sujet aient commencé en mars 1594, il fallut près de deux ans aux ligueurs du Languedoc pour reconnaître Henri IV comme leur roi. Ce long délai est difficilement compréhensible si l’on considère le portrait très sombre tracé par l’historiographie de la France à la fin des guerres de Religion: royaume épuisé, population soulevée contre les exactions des Grands, un monarque rempli des plus hautes promesses, des sujets qui voyaient dans son règne l’espoir d’un nouvel âge d’or. Les hésitations des ligueurs languedociens à retourner dans le giron royaliste s’expliquent par leur méfiance face à la sincérité de la conversion d’Henri IV au catholicisme, et par des divisions au sein de leur mouvement. Dans un royaume encore en construction, les guerres civiles et la réconciliation des ligueurs avec le pouvoir royal ont servi à définir où allait se trouver l’autorité au niveau provincial.
