Abstract
Les résidents de l'île de Montréal sont de moins en moins nombreux. La population des banlieues de la métropole continue cependant de s'accroître bien que la croissance de l'ensemble métropolitain connaisse un ralentissement notable. À l'extérieur de la métropole, le milieu régional accueille de plus en plus de nouveaux habitants, particulièrement dans les localités périurbaines. L'auteur examine la répartition de l'accroissement démographique entre les villes et la région montréalaise pour les périodes allant de 1971 à 1976 et de 1976 à 1981. Il en suggère également quelques facteurs explicatifs.
