Des profils de réflexion sismique à faible pénétration révèlent que la plate-forme de la baie de Sainte-Anne (La Pocatière) a été découpée dans les sédiments marins post-glaciaires légèrement inclinés vers le nord qui recouvrent la plaine côtière, que les produits de l’érosion ont été évacués et mis en place à l’extérieur de la baie, et qu’un chenal remblayé et une zone deltaïque existent devant l’entrée de la rivière Ouelle. Le réflecteur de surface indique la limite inférieure de l’action des glaces flottantes. Une étude des sédiments superficiels par carottage montre que la plate-forme est recouverte d’une mince couche de matériaux meubles très fins (par endroit plus de 80% des matériaux ayant une taille inférieure à 2 μ m), sauf dans la zone de sables et graviers en face de la rivière Ouelle. À long terme, la sédimentation sur la plate-forme se révèle très faible. À court terme, la baie agit comme une zone de transit pour les matériaux fins du Saint-Laurent qui sont finalement exportés vers l’aval.
