L’enjeu des photos aériennes d’Auschwitz ne se situe plus dans un procès contre l’évidence visuelle mais dans l’évidence éthique d’un appel à la responsabilité (la décision de bombarder), d’autant plus lorsqu’elles sont confrontées à la contre-plongée fantasmatique de prisonniers qui misaient sur les bombardements aériens comme seule issue possible à leur situation, au futur antérieur d’une barbarie encore jugulable. C’est l’effet pragmatique (en l’occurrence le non-faire) que ces photos ont déclenché ou les discours qu’elles ont suscités qu’on analyse dans ces pages. Dans les années soixante-dix les historiens Brugioni et Poirer ont ainsi invoqué l’inefficacité de la technique photographique de l’époque pour justifier l’inaction des alliés. Les discours d’escortes actuels sur les sites Internet qui diffusent les photos en question déploient, quant à eux, une rhétorique qui n’est pas moins innocente.
