Alors que les jeux de hasard et d’argent gagnent en accessibilité, de nombreuses études établissent un lien entre le jeu pathologique et la criminalité. La vie du joueur emprunterait un parcours précis vers la délinquance et s’inscrirait dans un cycle gambling-délinquance 2 . Or, l’inscription des trajectoires délinquantes dans un cycle aussi statique nous paraît discutable. Dans cet article, nous soutenons que chaque individu est soumis à l’influence de facteurs pouvant modifier la carrière du joueur et sa propension à commettre des délits. À l’aide d’une vingtaine d’entrevues, nous avons retracé la trajectoire des joueurs en abordant des thèmes susceptibles d’apporter un éclairage sur les modalités d’apparition de la délinquance chez ces individus. En analysant leur vie en termes de carrière, nous observons l’apparition, l’évolution et, parfois même, l’arrêt du jeu et des activités délictuelles. Quant aux facteurs susceptibles de moduler l’apparition des comportements délinquants, nous examinons l’influence des proches en termes d’opportunités criminelles et de dissuasion, l’effet précipitant des tensions financières et familiales, l’effet dissuasif de la peur ou, au contraire, les prédispositions caractérielles ou comportementales des joueurs et, finalement, l’ingéniosité des joueurs à financer et prolonger leurs activités de jeu. Nous souhaitons ainsi mettre en perspective le cycle gambling-délinquance en étudiant les éléments constitutifs de la carrière des joueurs pathologiques qui ont pour effet de neutraliser, retarder ou accélérer le passage à l’agir délictuel.
