Abstract
De pratique pour le moins moralement douteuse en 1971, la stérilisation est devenue en quelques années la méthode contraceptive la plus populaire des couples québécois qui croient ne plus vouloir d’enfant. L’analyse des statistiques annuelles de la Régie de l’assurance-maladie du Québec dévoile l’intensité de cette volte-face. L’auteur démontre qu’en plus de s’adonner massivement à cette forme radicale de contraception, les hommes et les femmes le font de plus en plus jeunes. En dix ans d’observation, on note une progression constante du recours a la stérilisation à des âges précoces. Cet élément nouveau doit être pris en considération par quiconque s’interroge sur l’opportunité et l’efficacité de toute action concertée en vue d’inciter les couples à avoir un ou des enfants de plus.
