Abstract
Few theatre artists since the mid-1990s have caused the stir in Manhattan's downtown theatre scene that Richard Maxwell has. The theatre productions of the thirty-four-year-old playwright, director, and composer have received a critical response that can best be compared to the initial reception of a former American theatre avant-garde. Recalling the reviews of early performances by Jack Smith, Richard Foreman, and Robert Wilson in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Maxwell's productions have either been attacked or praised for their anti-theatricality - or what critics have called their "flattened acting style", "theatricality in the mundane”, or "school of inexpressiveness". Nonetheless, there can be little doubt that Maxwell is one of the most innovative theatre artists of his generation. His unique vision has been recognized both nationally and internationally: for his play House, which premiered in New York in June 1998, Maxwell was awarded a Village Voice OBIE the following year; his work has also won critical acclaim in Europe, where House (and the subsequent productions Showy Lady Slipper and Caveman) recently toured major theatre festivals.
