La méthode de Penman, qui permet de calculer l’évaporation potentielle, est internationalement reconnue. Le rayonnement net n’étant pas toujours mesuré, Penman a été en mesure de calculer ce paramètre à l’aide d’une équation basée sur le bilan radiatif, dont les coefficients ont partiellement été déterminés à partir de données expérimentales recueillies en Angleterre. À partir des coefficients rapportés par divers auteurs, dont Penman et Mateer, nous avons analysé sept équations basées sur le bilan radiatif. Le rayonnement net a aussi été calculé en effectuant une régression linéaire à partir des variables météorologiques standard. Cette deuxième approche améliore quelque peu les résultats, mais nous avons tout de même retenu l’équation de Mateer adaptée, car celle-ci est basée sur des principes physiques qui la rendent plus applicable en dehors du site à l’étude.
