Abstract
The impact of applying different procedures for selecting and scaling seismic ground motion records and the influence of site conditions on ground motion amplification are examined by investigating the nonlinear seismic response of a building structure. Site class C is investigated for western Canada whereas class D and E sites are studied for eastern Canada. Ground motion records are selected and calibrated using several intensity-based procedures to match the NBCC 2005 design spectra. The focus is on simulated ground motion time histories. Nonlinear analysis of a four-storey concentrically braced steel frame showed that all scaling methods resulted in similar median inelastic brace deformations, in spite of differences between the characteristics of the historical and simulated records. Similar ground motion amplification at class D and E sites is also obtained for simulated and historical records. Simulated records are found adequate for the nonlinear seismic analysis of the structure studied.
