Abstract
For both families and patients, admission\nto the hospital environment can\nbe frightening. This sense of fear is\nmagnified in the intensive care unit\n(ICU) by the severe conditions and an\nintensive technological environment.\nWhile nurses grow accustomed to this,\nwe know from first-hand experience\nthat patients and families experience\nthe ICU as a daunting and dehumanizing\nenvironment. In the ICU, patients’\nidentities change as they lose emotional\nintimacy (Plakas et al., 2009). ICUis also\nthe place where many, perhaps for the\nfirst time, face their own mortality
