Cet article examine les attitudes contrastées du public en général et des pairs qui ont suivi la parution d’ouvrages écrits par des anthropologues professionnels pour un lectorat plus élargi : Michel Leiris, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Laura Bohannan, Nigel Barley entre autres. La mise en scène de soi-même se restreint aujourd’hui en Angleterre sous ses aspects méthodologiques et professionnels mais elle est pleinement acceptée aujourd’hui en France pour tous les publics. Cependant, de totalement interdite, elle est devenue, sous l’influence des livres de Castaneda – pourtant des faux prouvés – une des modes anthropologiques aux États-Unis sous le terme de « dialogisme ».
