Cet article compare différentes approches qui existent en histoire de l’environnement au Canada et aux États-Unis. Après avoir revu et évalué les traditions politiques et historiographiques qui ont influencé le développement de l’histoire de l’environnement aux États-Unis dans les années 1970, l’auteur dégage des courants similaires au Canada pour les comparer et tenter de déterminer si les fondements de l’histoire de l’environnement tels qu’ils se sont développés aux États-Unis conviennent à l’expérience nationale canadienne. Dans un deuxième temps, cet article examine les manières d’explorer les relations entre nature et société à l’intérieur d’un territoire transfrontalier déterminé, soit une biorégion incluant le Québec, les provinces de l’Atlantique, la Nouvelle-Angleterre et l’état de New York. Il s’avère que les traditions académiques des deux côtés de la frontière peuvent contribuer à l’histoire générale de l’environnement et ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives.
