Résumé Le dispositif institutionnel qui régit la protection de l’enfance en France se caractérise par l’intervention de deux acteurs majeurs que sont les collectivités locales et la justice. La protection de l’enfance s’est construite au fil des évolutions des représentations de ce qu’est l’intérêt de l’enfant mais aussi de la place qu’il convenait de donner à la famille, bénéficiaire des différentes actions mais de plus en plus incitée à devenir “co-productrice” de cette protection. Cette nouvelle place de la famille ne va pas sans tensions et contradictions. Une autre évolution majeure intervenue à la fin du siècle dernier est celle de la décentralisation, pour jeter les bases d’un système nouveau toujours en gestation aujourd’hui.
