Abstract
Au début du XX e siècle, rares sont les géographes français qui ont l’opportunité de visiter l’Amérique du Nord. Les voyages transcontinentaux auxquels Vidal de la Blache et Demangeon participent leur révèlent des sociétés où naissent de nouveaux rapports à l’espace: les grandes entreprises y mobilisent des formes concentrées d’énergie, mécanisent les tâches et tirent parti des transports de masse. Cette rencontre avec un monde plus dynamique a une influence décisive sur la conception que Vidal se fait de l’organisation régionale par les villes et par les réseaux de transport, comme sur la perception qu’a Demangeon de la puissance américaine : leurs oeuvres ultérieures le montrent.
