Abstract
La poésie de David Gascoyne est tiraillée entre réinterprétation de symboles alchimiques et paysages en voie de désymbolisation, dilemme lié au caractère irreprésentable de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. S’il est tentant de fabriquer de nouveaux schémas symboliques pour rendre compte de l’horreur à venir, de telles architectures ne donnent finalement lieu qu’à des jeux stylistiques où se désassemblent les composantes mythiques. En ce sens, elles préfigurent un autre aspect de la poésie gascoynienne, où les paysages européens sont peu à peu vidés de toute résonance symbolique, voire de toute signifiance. La situation ainsi dépeinte s’apparente aux friches de la modernité où « la perte de toute valeur mesurée par l’homme » suscite une nouvelle herméneutique tributaire de la réévaluation subjective. Dès lors, la déconstruction des symboles alchimiques sert de pont entre les intonations élégiaques héritées du modernisme et le rejet postmoderne des principes essentialistes.
