Abstract
El iglu1 de nieve (o igluvigak2) constituyo la manifestacion mas representativa y conocida de la arquitectura vernacula de los inuit; pero ni era la unica, ni ellos fueron sus inventores. Este «lugar antropologico» contuvo y reforzo la identidad cultural de un pueblo que desarrollo un enorme ingenio para adaptarse a unas condiciones extremas. Si el igluvigak representaba una vida seminomada, las casas prefabricadas que empezaron a ser usuales en la decada de 1950 se convirtieron en un reflejo inequivoco del sedentarismo y consecuentemente de una perdida de identidad cultural. Los inuit entraron definitivamente en la Era Moderna y sus viviendas dejaron de ser lugares identificatorios, relacionales e historicos y se convirtieron en espacios frios y ausentes de personalidad: la vida en comunidad dio paso al individualismo urbano. No obstante, en las ultimas decadas, los inuit han intentado reconstruir un espacio acorde con sus nuevas necesidades, pero tambien identificativo con cierta recuperacion de sus valores mas tradicionales: sin duda, las casas prefabricadas inuit representan el pasado, presente y futuro de este pueblo.
