Abstract
Les Premières Nations, les médias et le pouvoir de l'opinion publique Cet article vise à démontrer que les médias constituent une arène politique hautement conflictuelle dans laquelle les Premières Nations sont en compétition avec l'État et les groupes ethniques rivaux dans leurs efforts pour insérer leurs significations préférées dans le discours public. Les récepteurs souhaités de ces significations sont la population non autochtone dont l'opinion sert à la fois de contrainte politique et de ressource pour les Premières Nations quand elles tentent de transformer les politiques de l'État qui les affectent. En utilisant l'opposition des Innu du Labrador aux vols d'entraînement militaire comme base ethnographique, l'article se concentre sur certaines des contraintes imposées à l'exercice du pouvoir des Premières Nations quand elles tentent de mobiliser l'opinion publique, en particulier celles qui résultent des mouvements stratégiques et du contre-discours de leurs adversaires dans l'arène médiatique.
