Sur l’arrière-plan d’un souci partagé avec Robert Sévigny de ré-introduire l’humain dans l’approche de la psychose et de définir des cadres de recherche tenant compte de la complexité de l’humain, l’auteure décrit sa démarche comme relevant d’une anthropologie de l’expérience sensible à ce qui déborde la mise en récit et au rôle du contexte social et culturel dans l’élaboration de l’expérience de la psychose. Elle illustre la valeur heuristique et éthique de cette démarche à partir de trois sites de recherche : à Montréal, une étude la conduit à mettre l’accent sur le rôle et le sens d’une position de « retrait positif » pour des personnes diagnostiquées schizophrènes ; en Inde, des projets précisent le rôle de signifiants culturels dans l’élaboration d’expériences limites comme la psychose ; dans le Montréal pluriculturel, une étude illustre la place et le sens de la culture dans les pratiques cliniques impliquant des patients en début de psychose.
