Abstract
Dans cette analyse de YAjax de Sophocle, on a cherché à tenir compte des pratiques culturelles susceptibles d'éclairer la mise en scène du suicide. Il s'agit notamment de comprendre la métaphore du sacrifice dans le dernier monologue d'Ajax ainsi que le problème posé par le cadavre, dans lequel se confondent coupable et victime. Confusion dont une loi athénienne connaît le remède, stipulant que la main du suicidé doit être coupée du cadavre et enterrée séparément. Or, dans la pièce de Sophocle, aucune main ne tient l'instrument de mort ; l'épée sur laquelle Ajax se jette devient au contraire le boucher-sacrificateur.
