Abstract
This article analyses the process through which professors became “professionals” in the University of Caen during the 15th and 16th centuries. The process was closely linked to the financing of the University and therefore to its relations with publics powers. The Parlement of Rouen imposed two reforms (1521 and 1586) on the University in an attempt to regulate the professors more closely; these led to a definition of the professors’ competence and to the assertion of the necessity of a salary for their work. This last question was central and provoked important changes in the relations between professors at the end of the 16th century, when the University was trying to recover from the Religious Wars.
