Avec l'intensification des discussions sur la condition postmoderne et la remise en question des limites du savoir que celle-ci engendre, plusieurs praticiens des sciences sociales se sont interrogés sur les conditions discursives de leur entreprise intellectuelle. En géographie, ces préoccupations se sont déployées sur différents fronts du discours géographique: 1) le discours géographique comme objet d'analyse; 2) l'innovation terminologique et conceptuelle comme moyen de contourner les résistances de l'objet ou du langage; 3) l'adoption d'un nouveau style d'écriture ­sujet de l'écriture, forme, et stratégies discursives. Chemin faisant, s'est développée une prise de conscience du caractère problématique d'une rationalité discursive qui pose le langage comme un simple véhicule transitif de la pensée. Cette transformation relative et partielle du discours des géographes, qui est illustrée à l'aide de quelques exemples, répond à certains des enjeux liés à ce qu'il a été convenu d'appeler la postmodernité au sein des sciences sociales.
