This paper reports a study of turbulent wake of two-dimensional rectangular cylinders in an open channel. The water depth upstream of the cylinders was maintained at 100 mm. Three cylinders having aspect ratios (defined as the ratio of the cylinder’s length to thickness) of 1, 2 and 4 were mounted vertically at mid-span of the open channel. For each aspect ratio, the cylinders were oriented through four angles of incidence (0°, 15°, 30° and 45°). A particle image velocimetry technique was used to conduct detailed velocity measurements at various streamwise-spanwise planes around the cylinders. From these measurements, the mean streamlines, iso-contours of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stresses as well as the profiles of the mean velocities and turbulent quantities were obtained to document the effects of cylinder aspect ratio and angles of incidence on the wake characteristics.
